wake up

early monday morning i woke to the cries of a man.

i heard it while i was still dreaming, shouts and whimpers of fear. i haven't really heard anything like it before. it was like the sound of a terrified hunted child, but with the voice of a grown man.

it was disturbing, and i thought it was just another crazy homeless guy, which tragically, vancouver streets are full of. so i stayed in my cozy bed trying not to be awake.

then i heard him stumble underneath my window.
moaning, groaning, and hissing in fear.
i wanted to just shut him out and go back to sleep.
but then i heard him let out a strangled cry...

'help me....someone...HELP ME PLEASE'

that got me out of bed and i looked out the window, but he had already ran off with a howl.

so after a brief mental debate with myself i phoned 911.

the operator asked what kind of emergency it was; police, fire, or ambulance.
i said i didn't know, i could just hear a man in distress crying for help.
she patched me to the police and their operator told me that they had already gotten many calls about it and police had just arrived at the scene.

i didn't see the police or the man.
but i sure hope someone helped him.

i couldn't go back to sleep.

Urban morality ftw!

Good of you to call, J. A friend from work recently woke up to the police at his door. Two people had passed out in his backyard and a neighbour called the cops when he saw them there on his way to work at 5 am. Turned out, the two guys had been brutally assaulted by a larger group and weren't so much passed out as beaten to a pulp. No one saw anything, of course.
