lean sea meat
Ever since i found out about those big ocean trawlers that scrape the seabed for every little piece of sea meat, i have worried a little.
That was more than a decade ago, but things only seem to have gotten worse, not better.
I've posted about my unease before, and now i've finally done a little homework.
The David Suzuki Foundation has published a guide to sustainable seafood in BC. The sea creatures in the picture are in the top 5 most sustainable seafood choices (in order of sustainability).
green sea urchin
giant pacific octopus
red sea urchin
pink & spiny scallops
and 5 species of clams.
not really that surprising since most people don't like sea urchin or octopus...but i love octopus, and sea urchin is ok if my mouth is prepared for it.
it's a useful publication, and the website has links to some other seafood guides. Now i know what to get next time i go for sushi...

You don't have to worry about dredging the ocean floor if you eat beef.
Before you say 'But Hunter, you don't know WHERE that beef came from!' I have to point out that I eat the cattle that roam free in the fields that surround me, dude...
Not saying you DON'T eat beef, just pointing out that I don't worry about depleting the cattle stocks anytime soon.

That's why when i've been going out to sushi places recently i've just been getting beef yakisoba, gyu-don (beef bowls) and veggie rolls.
i don't get fussy about where the beef is from either...as long as it's Canadian.

Roam free, ye anti-biotic, hormone laced cows of yore, roam free!
That said, we're screwed. In general. There's so much crap we don't know about it's not even funny, and the pols will never bring in a truth in labelling law that would cover the things it should.
For example, you can buy a food product that's a product of Canada, but there's nothing to say that the components of it weren't produced in China (and tainted with who knows which nasty chemical), and such limited monitoring and testing of either imported products or home-grown that it might as well not be there.
But then, being involved in the system these days, I know just how badly things are screwed up and how pointless it is to worry about, because it will never happen because we don't have governments that pursue "good government" these days, but "good business".
Depressing, but true.

it is an interesting situation, that is for sure. But on the same token I just read an article on eating 'organic' foods. Either way, there is bad stuff. But back to the real topic, seafood... I am doing my part by not even attempting to eat seafood of any kind. So don't feel bad next time you hit the sushi bar Jeff. You can have my share, if it makes you feel better.
