publish me

(it's a liposome, which are explained in article #2)

The apartment has been cleaned and i've gotten more serious about finding people who can either give me a job or publish the articles i wrote for my thesis project...or both.

My thesis is a three part series on genetic medicine written for an audience that doesn't have to know very much about science.

The first article looks at the struggle to develop gene therapy for cystic fibrosis, a genetic disease that people initially thought would be easy to fix with gene therapy. but even though the genetics behind cystic fibrosis is relatively simple, delivering a genetic therapy to where it is needed in the body to treat a disease is very difficult.

A system that can delivery genes and small pieces of genetic material that can turn off genes, a process called RNA interference, is the focus of the second article. the technology is still in the development stage, but once it works and gets approved it will be big.

The final article looks at the last step that genetic medicine, and any other sort of medicine, has to get through; drug development and approval. It also highlights a new cooperative approach to pre-clinical development that an organization in BC has initiated.

I think it's a good little series that addresses key genetic concepts and issues in the application of genetics in medicine, and you don't need to know a lot about biology to get into it. however, getting all three articles published could still be a challenge. there are not that many general audience magazines in Canada and i want it in a Canadian publication. Most of the people I interviewed for the series are Canadian.

I haven't sent any emails out to publications pitching the series yet. i'm waiting to see if i can utilize some connections so that i can email someone directly. i want to maximize the probability that editors will take a serious look at the series.

I would be ecstatic if i could get all three articles published in successive issues of a high profile magazine...but i'm a realist. i'll be happy if all of them just get published.
