for those of you who don't know, Harper's Magazine is amazing. Great writing, on par, and in my opinion, often better than The New Yorker. Although to be fair I haven't gone through any recent issues of the New Yorker in order to do an issue by issue comparison.
My Momma got me a subscription for Christmas, which was very sweet of her. One aspect of the subscription that I've been taking advantage of recently is archived and online issues going back to 1850!
Also, in reference to my last entry, the Jimmy Cobb show was great.
The John Stetch Trio opened and they did some very interesting things with TV theme songs, which I think was a pretty accessible way to present Jazz to casual listeners. Most people know the tunes already, or at least how they are suppose to go, so it's easier to hear how the musicians change it.
When Jimmy Cobb's group came out it didn't take long to get the feel of the original recording. Jimmy must have hand picked these guys because you could definitely hear the influence of the original musicians in their sound. Granted, what jazz saxophonist can't be influenced by Coltrane and what jazz trumpeter can't be influenced by Miles?
The trumpet player in particular looked like a linebacker version of Miles Davis and even dressed like him, ala post-fusion era.
It was a great show. My itch was scratched.
